The story of this place

Founded in 1154, Dmitrov retains the earthen rampart of its early fortress in the historic centre. The wooden defences have disappeared, leaving the terrain to convey the old kremlin's scale and outline.

Inside stands the early-16th-century Assumption Cathedral, surrounded by later buildings. Today's wooden Nikolsky Gate is a modern reconstruction. Museum exhibitions complement the walk with the history of Dmitrov and its surroundings.
