A white stone church with sculpted ornament and a gilded crown near the Pakhra–Desna confluence.
The story of this place
Construction of the Church of the Sign on Boris Golitsyn's estate began in 1690; it was consecrated in 1704. Unusual among churches near Moscow, it combines a tall, many-sided structure with elaborate white stone carving.
An openwork crown replaces the familiar onion dome. Sculptural decoration and complex forms connect the church with European Baroque architecture. The designer's identity is not securely established, so specific popular attributions should be treated cautiously.
