The story of this place

In December 1966, the remains of an unknown soldier were moved from a mass grave outside Moscow and reinterred beside the Kremlin wall.

The memorial opened and the Eternal Flame was lit on 8 May 1967. The flame was brought from the Field of Mars in Leningrad, now St Petersburg.
