The story of this place

The square developed along the Kremlin's eastern wall as a place for trade and public gatherings. Its long outline connects the Historical Museum, trading arcades and Intercession Cathedral into a coherent urban ensemble.

Its appearance took shape over centuries: the cathedral dates from the 16th century, while the Historical Museum and Upper Trading Rows belong to the 19th. UNESCO inscribed the square and Kremlin together in 1990.
