The story of this place

Patriarch Nikon founded the monastery in 1656. Its concept evoked the Holy Land: the Resurrection Cathedral drew on the architecture of Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Construction and alterations continued through the 17th and 18th centuries. Following severe destruction in 1941, the ensemble was restored in successive stages. Its present appearance combines surviving historic fabric with reconstructed elements, notably in the rotunda and ceramic decoration.
