Colourful domes, brick vaults and intimate passages inside Red Square’s Intercession Cathedral.
The story of this place
The Cathedral of the Intercession on the Moat was built in 1555–1561. Rather than one large hall, it contains separate churches linked by galleries: originally eight surrounded the central Church of the Intercession.
A church above Saint Basil's burial was added in 1588, giving the ensemble its familiar name. Later additions and paintings record successive stages of its history. Today the cathedral is part of the State Historical Museum.
