A hilltop monastery with an early white stone cathedral and 17th-century chambers.

The story of this place

Savva of Storozhi founded the monastery in 1398 with support from Prince Yuri Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Its early-15th-century Nativity Cathedral is among the ensemble's oldest surviving buildings.

The monastery expanded substantially in the 17th century, gaining fortified walls, the Tsaritsa's Chambers and a palace. The contrast between the early cathedral and later buildings shows how a small community grew into a major architectural complex.
