A literary museum among meadows and wooded hills familiar to Alexander Blok from childhood.

The story of this place

Botanist Andrey Beketov, Alexander Blok's grandfather, bought Shakhmatovo in 1874. Blok visited from childhood, and the estate and surrounding countryside became an important part of his literary world.

The historic house burned down in 1921. Today's building is a museum reconstruction opened in 2001, rather than Blok's surviving home. The park and landscape complement the displays with a walk through places associated with the Beketov family.
