The story of this place

Joseph Bové’s stone Bolshoi Petrovsky Theatre opened in 1825. The building was a prominent landmark on the new Theatre Square.

Alberto Cavos rebuilt it after a fire in 1853. Much of the silhouette now recognised by its columns and Apollo’s chariot was in place by the 1856 reopening.
