A drama theatre on Theatre Square closely associated with Alexander Ostrovsky’s plays.

The story of this place

In 1824 Moscow’s drama company opened a stage in the converted house of merchant Vasily Vargin. Joseph Bové designed the conversion for theatre use.

In the 19th century the company became closely associated with Ostrovsky’s plays. A monument to the playwright stands by the historic entrance on Teatralny Proyezd.
